Over the last two weeks, the students have been working on a variety of literacy centers including word work that focuses on spelling patterns and partner reading where the students are working on their reading fluency. The students have also been reading within a small a teacher-led group. During this time, we have been working on making predictions and summarizing texts read.

We connected this work to our focus on fossils within social studies. Our learning focus was: identify other perspectives by exploring a variety of ideas, opinions, responses and oral, print. The students read three different newspaper articles from the Calgary area. One from 1882, another from 1948 and a final article from 2011. The students compared the changing perspectives around the importance of fossils within our province. The students wrote short summaries on the perspective represented in each article. The small groups then worked together to read a variety of opinions on fossils, matching them to the year and article they most closely matched. Have your child share their opinion about the value of fossils with you.

The grade fours had a fantastic time during our netball residency this week. It is such a wonderful, fast paced game. Each of the seven players has a following position which helps it to be a true team sport where all players are active and engaged. It allowed students to work on their passing and shooting skills. Thank you to our Parent Council for making this opportunity possible.

This short week was all about kindness at Andrew Sibbald School. The grade two's and kindergarten classes kicked our week off with a fantastic assembly centered on the concept of kindness. This was a perfect fit with our Valentine's celebrations this week and Pink Shirt Day next week.

Thank you to all the families who were able to make it out for our Grade Four Celebration of Learning. The students were incredibly excited to share their work with their families and the students within our school. It was a wonderful way to culminate our time spent working on the Minecraft Design Challenge. The students showed a great deal of growth throughout this experience. They developed patience with challenging technology, worked to collaborate and be flexible with their peers and to use their imaginations and celebrate their creativity. As they learned about social, economic and climate resilience, the students developed a greater understanding of the needs of our city and the importance of creating places that are open and accessible to all. If you were unable to join us for our celebration at the school, please have your child share their work with you at home.
