Monday, June 19th to Friday, June 23rd

Despite the rain, the grade fours had a fantastic time on our field trip to Heritage Park. It was wonderful to experience all of our learning in Social Studies first hand. We sheltered from the rain in a tipi, felt beaver pelts as we learned about the fur trade and rode a train like the ones that helped to make settlement in the West possible. Seeing the first settler homes, the "soddies", homes that housed families with sixteen children and sandstone buildings helped the students to better understand what life was like for early settlers. Most are happy that they are able to go to a school with hundreds of students and one grade per classroom rather than a one room schoolhouse of the past!

This week, the students were engaged in The Andrew Sibbald Summer Games. Throughout the week, they took part in a variety of challenges where they worked together in a different physical tasks. They showed positive teamwork as they encouraged one another to achieve a common goal. We were excited to finish off the week with our pancake breakfast and sports day.

Monday, June 5th to Thursday, June 8th

The students have been busy learning about plant growth and change in science. We have learned about the needs of plants and how different types of seeds and plants require different conditions to thrive. We put this learning into action as we planted carrots, potatoes and zucchini in our community garden. The students have planted a variety of herbs that are growing in our classroom and we soaked and watched beans sprout. Our beans are now planted in order for us to observe the life cycle of a bean plant. We are excited to see how our plants grow and change over the next few weeks.

Tuesday, May 30th to Friday, June 2nd

This week, the students were excited to see their food trucks come together. We experimented with a variety of 3D shapes as we created the trucks from a 2D net. The students had a fantastic time trying our shapes such as cubes, cones and cylinders to finish off their trucks. It was wonderful to see individuals add artistic elements to complete their work. They were very excited to display their creations in The Learning Commons. Next week, we will practice adding and subtracting decimals as we place orders and make change while ordering from the trucks.

It was a very exciting day at Andrew Sibbald today. It is hard to believe that today the school participated in its 19th Big Brave Event. It was incredible to see so many students participating this year. The students were able to raise over $73 000 for The Big Brave. Today's event was such a fantastic celebration of the students hard work. Their efforts will help to send over 500 children to Camp Kindle. A huge thank you to all the families who helped to make this event a success.

Monday, May 15th to Friday, May 19th

The students in grade four have been reading a new book, The City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau. The book tells the story of a city without natural light that is  t hreatened by an aging infrastructure and rapidly diminishing supplies. The book offers a variety of wonderful opportunities to connect to our science unit: Building Devices and Vehicles That Move. The students played the role of one of the jobs in the book, Pipeworks Laborer, and worked collaboratively to design a pipe system that could carry water from one place to another. This met the learning outcome:  Use simple forces to power or propel a device such as moving water downhill.

Monday, May 8th to Friday, May 12th

We had an incredible time during our weeklong Trickster residency. The group brought such a fantastic energy to our building. The week started with nothing but a medium, lights and bamboo poles and a general theme, Alberta's animals and simple machines. Within our first hour, the students had generated a variety of ideas. It was amazing to see how the ideas were pulled together by the end of the week. We so appreciated seeing so many families at our evening performance. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
